A Mutare woman has done the unthinkable by offering her 15-year-old daughter to her boyfriend.

The woman (47), who cannot be named to avoid exposing the victim was recently incarcerated for 14 months on her own plea of guilty. Two months were suspended on condition that she does not to commit the same offence for the next two years. She will serve an effective 12 months in prison.

The accused was convicted after pleading guilty to charges of violating section 94 (1) (b) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9: 23 which classify abuse of the girl child as a punishable criminal offence.

The accused gave up her daughter to her boyfriend after convincing her by lying that the boyfriend was to take her to South Africa to buy her clothes.

The state led by prosecutor Matthew Chimutunga said sometime in November 2018 the accused made an arrangement with the boyfriend Peter Sithole to offer him the complainant and on December 2018 at 1400hrs she was taken to Sithole’s home. She however, refused to have sexual intercourse with him.

The following day the girl ran away from Sithole’s house and reported her mother to the police leading to her arrest. Meanwhile a Zimunya man recently appeared in court on allegations of raping his wife’s sister’s minor daughter while she was asleep.

Abel Chipaumire (30), of Karuza Village under Chief Zimunya, appeared at the Mutare Magistrates’ Court facing charges of raping his relative’s 9-year-old daughter.

Chipaumire was not asked to plead to the charges when he appeared before magistrate Ms Nyasha Kature charged with rape. Considering that the only witness is his wife with whom he stays with, the court feared he could interfere and temper with the exhibit required by the court.

Ms Kature remanded Chipaumire in custody to March 7 and advised him to approach the High Court for bail application.

State counsel Mr Brighton Shamuyarira alleged that sometime in August last year during the night, Chipaumire approached the little girl while she was sleeping on the floor in the dining room.

The court heard that Chipaumire stripped off the girl’s underwear and raped her. It is the State’s case that the girl screamed, alerting the wife of the accused who went to investigate only to find his husband on top of her niece.

The court heard that the witness told the mother of the complainant, her sister, on what had happened the previous day but the mother did not believe her and turned a deaf ear to the case.

“Chipaumire’s wife, the following morning advised her sister of the matter but she did not believe and kept the matter to herself,” said Mr Shamuyarira.

The matter came to light on February 19 this year when the teacher in charge of children’s welfare at the primary school where the Grade 3 girl attends observed that she was no longer performing well in school activities. The court also heard that the teacher informed the school headmaster who then alerted Mrs Resistance Shamuyarira, an official from social welfare Mutare  who then made a police report.

The girl was taken to hospital where she was medically examined and it was found that she had been sexually abused. Investigations led to the arrest of Chipaumire.
