A former manager at Waverly Blankets has been hauled before the court for allegedly stealing over US$40 000 from his employer.

His contract has since been terminated.

However, nothing has been recovered yet.

Abdul Raoof Dawood appeared before the Mutare Magistrate, Mr Richard Ramaboa.

He was facing theft charges as defined in Section 113 (1) of the Criminal Law, Codification and Reform Act, Chapter 9:23.
Mr Thom Nyatsuro prosecuted.

Dawood was remanded out of custody to May 31, 2022.

Mr Nyatsuro said the accused person took advantage of his position as a manager and unlawfully took US$40 768 from the company.

“From January 2022 to August 2022, and at Waverly Blankets Shop Number 45, Tembwe Street, Mutare, Abdul Roof Dawood unlawfully took US$40 768 from Waverly Blankets,” said Mr Nyatsuro.

He said during that period, Dawood, as the shop manager, would receive daily cash sales from the shop.

After receiving the daily cash sales, he was supposed to receipt, compile and prepare them for the banking process.

“During that period, the accused person took the liberty to manipulate the figures and pocket some of the money for his personal benefit,” said Mr Nyatsuro.

When the company suspected that there was foul play in the way the finances were being handled, investigations were instituted.

“A stock take was carried out randomly, which resulted in a shortfall of US$40 768 being noted. Dawood became the prime suspect,” said Mr Nyatsuro.
