CHIPINGE College of Horticulture students majoring in building and block laying have scored a first after they were contracted to construct a classroom block and toilets at Southdown School.

The group, comprising 14 students, is being supervised by their tutor on the project. They are benefiting from getting valuable hands-on experience while also earning the college some money for the paid work they are doing.

Mr Victor Ngwenya, the college administrator, was all smiles as he narrated how the students have made the institution proud.

“I am proud of these students who did a good job of advertising what skilled young people can do to better their lives and to make the world a better place to be. It is a Government-sponsored project and the Ministry of Public Works is responsible for inspecting the quality of the works. As we speak, there are 14 students on site at Southdown School and we are really excited about the whole project,” he said.

Of note is that out of the 14 students, 11 are Zimbabweans and three from the refugee ranks.

While other young people complain about lack of employment opportunities, vocational training colleges offer them an avenue to upgrade their lives through acquiring life-changing skills.

Those enrolled at Chipinge College of Horticulture, situated near Tongogara Refugee Camp, are benefiting from such training.
