SPORT enthusiasts Macdonald Mabambe and his partner Ronald Gosha will early next month launch a multi discipline Visionaries Sports Academy at Mutare Boys High aimed at producing international athletes.

The welcome gesture by Mabambe and Gosha is a product of realisation by former athletes to go back to basics and invest in young athletes who can be nurtured into future stars.

Mabambe and Gosha are not household names in sport but the two are former football players who, however, did not go far with their careers.

A tournament to select players will be held tomorrow (Saturday)  at Mutare Boys High School.

The academy will cater for children who are 6 up to 17 years.

They will first enrol two boys teams in the Under-15 and 17 category and a girl’s team.

“All is now set for the trials and we look forward to a larger turn out. We will have our trials at Mutare Boys High School tomorrow. So far we have received an overwhelming response. Not only does this open an opportunity for the youngsters to realise their dreams, but that they will gain exposure.

“We decided to set up an academy after being frustrated from where we are coming from. We used to be so much into sport but we did not have the right infrastructure and the right people to take us through. We will begin in Mutare but over time we will expand our services and reach out beyond the borders of Zimbabwe to other countries as well,” said Mabambe said

Gosha said that they will be using Mutare Boys High for training before they find their own place.

“Mutare Boys High has allowed us to use their facilities. We will just start off with a sports academy but our dream is to start up a school. We are not only focusing on sport but also academics.  We have chipped in to assist young athletes to try and realise their dreams by providing a platform for them to express their talents,” said Mabambe.

Mabambe said they want to try and reduce poverty levels by creating industry where athletes can be employed and earn a living.
