AN ELDERLY Mutare woman who has had enough of her 29-year-old son’s physical, emotional and verbal abuse has approached the courts to seek refuge.

Neria Nengomasha appeared before Mutare magistrate Ms Nyasha Kuture on Monday seeking a protection order against her son Valentine Makodzere whom she accused of assaulting as well as insulting her.

“I have had no peace from him since his father died in 2016. He pushes me aside when he wants to pass and has no respect for me whatsoever.

‘‘He calls me names, yet I am his biological mother. Your Worship, I carried him for nine months in my own womb but he disrespects all that. I beg the court that he be stopped from assaulting me,” said Nengomasha.

She also said that her son and his family lived with her and were refusing to move out even though she had made a lot of eviction attempts before.

Nengomasha also told the court that her son spent his time sleeping and not fending for his wife and five-year-old child, leaving her to do it.

“He does not go to work and I am the one who breaks my back to take care of him and his family. The little that he gets from whatever he does when he is not sleeping, he buys drugs and marijuana to get high. I take care of his wife and child. He does not even help her even with chores,” she said.

Nengomasha begged the court for a restraining order to stop her son from assaulting, insulting and harassing  her.

“He calls me a prostitute and a witch. At my age, how can I be a prostitute? I want him to pay for all the pain he has caused me, and he is not even apologetic about it,” she said.

In his response, Makodzore told the court that there was bad blood between him and his mother.

He also said that there was no need for an eviction order against him as he was in the process of moving out with his family.

Ms Kuture advised Makodzore to change his behaviour towards his mother and treat her with respect.

“You are not the father of the house even though you are all grown up, you will always be her child, so give her the respect that she deserves.

‘‘The protection order has been granted to your mother against you and it will be valid for the next five years,” she said.

She, however, advised Nengomasha to apply for an eviction order if she wanted Makodzore out of her house.
