MANICALAND last year recorded a surge in violent crimes, particularly murder cases which sharply rose by 21 percent from the 66 cases recorded the previous year, Constitutional Court Judge Justice Rita Makarau has said.

Justice Makarau said this while officially opening the 2022 legal year at the Mutare High Court this morning.

Justice Makarau said the case findings by the police show that 80 murder cases were recorded in Manicaland in 2021, marking a 21 percent increase from the 66 cases recorded the prior year.

Justice Makarau also expressed concern over high commission of crimes such as rape, armed robberies, robberies and unlawful entries.

“Rape cases by adults in Manicaland dropped in 2021 while rape committed by juveniles went up. Robberies in which the robbers used firearms have become a cause for concern, not only in Manicaland, but nationwide. In Manicaland 24 armed robberies involving firearms were reported in 2021. However, armed robberies in which the suspects used other weapons that were not firearms were 33,” she said.

Justice Makarau said while most of these cases dropped in 2021 when compared to 2020, the statistics are still worrisome.
