THE United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has availed US$46 000 to Chipinge Town Council to construct a new vegetable shade.

The council housing director, Mr Edson Munjanja, confirmed the development and said the vegetable shade will benefit about 203 vendors.

The project comes at a time when the council is destroying all illegal structures in the town. Mr Munjanja said the project will be completed by year end.

“We partnered UNDP to construct a 800-square metres vegetable shade which will cater for vegetable vendors. Construction is already underway and will be completed soon. Vendors are currently operating at a sub-standard mall and council made a resolution to channel funds we received from UNDP towards the construction of a new state-of-the-art mall.

“Once completed, we expect vendors to contribute significantly towards the council’s dwindling revenue base through paying their levies. We also want to ensure that vendors operate in a clean and conducive environment to avoid the spreading of diseases,” he said.
