THE Japanese Embassy last week handed over a US$140 000 state-of-the-art child rehabilitation centre to Simukai Child Protection Programme in Chipinge.

The centre was built in Usanga by the Japanese Embassy and other development partners and has a capacity to accommodate 25 children.

The 16-roomed centre includes seven bedrooms and a counselling room, two offices, a medical room, and bathrooms for boys and girls, among other things.

The centre also houses witnesses in court cases involving the abuse of minors.

Director for Simukai Child Protection, Mrs Franscisca Matsanga, hailed the Japanese Embassy for the kind gesture.

“We owe the opening of this centre to the Japanese Embassy. Simukai has been operating in Chipinge since 2007 and during this period we have been losing a lot of property to thieves.

“Vulnerable children were having a torrid time as we had to accommodate them in rented houses. They now have a new home and we hope to develop a child to his or her full potential.

“Abused children will also be housed at the centre when the police will be conducting their investigations,” she said.

Speaking at the same occasion, Assistant Chipinge District Development Coordinator, Mr Tedious Beto, welcomed the development and said a lot of vulnerable children will benefit from its establishment.

“Chipinge has a lot of vulnerable children and we welcome this development. Most of the vulnerable children are coming from Mozambique and we hope no more children will be found roaming the streets,” he said.

Simukai Child Protection Programme is a development partner that advocates for the rights of children. It operates in Manicaland’s seven districts and is headquartered in Mutare.

The organisation’s head of programmes, Mr Evans Magumise, said they received a grant of US$100 000 from the Japanese Embassy while the other US$40 000 came from Simukai and other donors.

He said Simukai Child Protection appreciates the role that Chipinge Town Council played in availing a free stand for the centre.
