POLICE have released the names of the three National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) crew members who died in a railway accident between Mutare and Machipanda yesterday night.
The loaded locomotive, which was carrying chrome concentrates and granite blocks, derailed, plunged into a gorge and caught fire after failing to negotiate a sharp curve on its way to Mozambique from Zimbabwe.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.
“Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal railway accident which occurred at the zero kilometre peg along Zimbabwe-Mozambique Railway Line, Forbes Border Post, Mutare last night in which Tasunungurwa Mapuranga (49), Enock Tawabarira and Pride Femerepi died.
“The three victims, who are National Railways of Zimbabwe employees, were trapped in a goods train horse which was pulling 14 wagons after it had derailed and caught fire,” said the police.
