THE sky is blue, the mountain is glorious, the trees are shady, the mountain flowers add some enticing colours, the birds linger nearby and sing beautiful melodies and the feeling of calmness is overwhelming.

The grass forming part of the lawn seems to have a party with the wind.

The slight chill in the air is enough to give a gentle shiver, but not enough for one to need a jacket.

A breeze tickles the nearby pine trees, making their leaves shake and sway with laughter.

The valley below looks like a hide-away of the lost heaven.

The sense of inner peace and harmony is unmatched.

Welcome to World View in Nyanga!

World’s View is a spectacular vista on the escarpment of the Nyanga Downs Plateau in the Eastern Highlands mountain range, just north of Nyanga.

It is situated at an altitude of 2,248 metres with a 600 metres drop to the plain below on the western side.

Having lived in the shadow of Victoria Falls, Matopos in Bulawayo and Great Zimbabwe in Masvingo, the sleeping giant has awakened.

Last weekend, the sleeping tourism giant of Nyanga woke up with a raucous roar that was heard across the world, particularly in Botswana.

Visiting Botswana President, Dr Mokwgweetsi Masisi described Nyanga as a hidden treasure.

“Nyanga is a hidden treasure, you should talk more about it as well as advertise it. Those who have never been here, they better come. They will be in for a real surprise. It is really spectacular, there is a lot to see here,” said President Masisi.

So who are the treasure hunters who will unearth this hidden gem and present their ‘trophy’ to the world?

Director of the National Trust of Zimbabwe, Mrs Gill Honeyman (left) chats with President Masisi and the Botswana First Lady, Mrs Masisi as other officials look on.

The custodian of World View, National Trust of Zimbabwe’s director, Ms Jill Honeyman was over the moon to host President Masisi and his wife, Mrs Neo Jane Masisi.

She handed over a bouquet of flowers to the esteemed visitors.

“It is always a pleasure to have respected visitors like President Masisi visiting us here in Nyanga. We appreciate the good work Government is doing to promote tourism across the country. We are the only national trust in the country and we hope this visit will spur more activities here.

“We have a lot to offer to the world and we are always ready to play host to everyone here,” said Ms Honeyman during a brief chat on the sidelines of President Masisi’s visit to World View last week on Saturday.

Chairperson of Botswana-based Diaspora Investment Group of Zimbabwe, Mr Liberty Mtetwa said the historic visit by President Masisi heralded a bigger and better union between the two countries.

“As the ordinary citizenry, we applaud such efforts and are encouraged when leaders embrace unity, inclusivity and productivity. The great strides of solidarity exhibited by this visit will spur the vast trade and investment opportunities available.

“Botswana offers great unique tourism with the great Okavango Delta, a huge wildlife population, while the Eastern Highlands in Zimbabwe bring stunning panoramic views, a vast number of waterfalls and natural pools, diverse bird and wildlife population. If these tourists attraction are adequately promoted and marketed, they will attract thousands of visitors, thereby contributing to both countries’ Gross Domestic Products (GDPs),” said Mr Mtetwa.

With calls to invest in world-class infrastructure around tourist attractions in the Eastern Highlands, Mr Mtetwa said it is time for all interested players to play ball.

“We have always intended to pivot on the mutually beneficial relationship between Zimbabwe and Botswana. We thank Batswana for their great hospitality over the years. We also share trade opportunities by supporting Government to Government efforts through trade investment organs.

President Masisi also went fishing at the Nyanga Trout Farm and Hatchery last week on Saturday and enjoyed some good catches

“We have explored trade opportunities in Manicaland and I believe this is the time to act. The introduction of the modernised railway system increases bilateral trade opportunities in the two countries and this potential needs to be harnessed for the betterment of both countries,” he said.

A boost in tourist arrivals will also have great benefits for locals especially artists. The sculptures at World View left President Masisi smiling and he bought some of their artefacts.

“We visited an artist by the name Livingstone at World View and we bought some pieces from him. I bought a pangolin sculpture from him. Zimbabwe is well-known for skilled soap stone sculptures,” said President Masisi.

Zimbabwe Tourism Authority chief executive, Mrs Winnie Muchanyuka described last weekend’s visit as historic and heart warming.

“His Excellency, President Masisi’s visit to the Eastern Highlands has come at a time when Zimbabwe is looking forward to high level delegates coming to the country. It endorses the country as a tourism destination.

“His visit is exciting to us as players in the tourism industry, more-so coming to the hidden gem that is the Eastern Highlands.

“A lot of visitors who usually come to Zimbabwe will only go to the majestic Victoria Falls. Having destination Eastern Highlands endorsed by such a high level delegation is really heart warming for the tourism industry,” she said.

Mrs Muchanyuka added: “We look forward to more delegates from the region coming to visit hidden gems like the Eastern Highlands. We will play our part in marketing all places of interest in Zimbabwe. We want to see Zimbabwe claiming its place as a tourist destination of choice.”
