NEWBOYS Tenax made a mockery of their Premiership underdog tag when they upstaged city rivals Manica Diamonds in this closely contested Chibuku Super Cup clash which signaled the first ever instalment of the Mutare Derby at Sakubva yesterday.

The prison wardens took the bragging rights at stake, with a precious victory that thrusts them back into contention to progress to the next round of the competition.

Defeat, on the other hand, leaves the diamond miners on the ropes after suffering two successive defeats.

Talisman and former skipper Farai Mugumwa was at his dazzling best again and struck twice, while goalkeeper Simbarashe Nkosi saved a penalty kick to carry the day for Tenax.

Talent Chamboko had drawn the Gem Boys level in the first half but they were undone by Timire Mamvura’s miss from the spot five minutes from the end.

Mrashall Mudehwe and Kuda Gurure were also guilty of fluffing their lines when clear on goal.

Tenax coach Shadreck “Father” Mugurasave was elated at the final whistle.

“We came here prepared to show who the big boys in Mutare are. My young team has impressed in this local derby and we can only improve going forward. This was a good way of bouncing back after losing last weekend,” said the former Buffaloes coach.

For Johannes “Dutch Mentor” Nhumwa and his Manica Diamonds, the search for answers to their poor form and an elusive victory continues.

“We just did not get things right today. Our application was not as good in a lot of areas. In the end, we suffered for missing the chances we created. That is what happens, you always get punished for such poor performances,” said Nhumwa.

Tenax play Cranborne Bullets in the next game, while Manica Diamonds take on Black Rhinos to conclude their Group Three fixtures.
