NOW that a national lockdown is underway, please self-isolate and stay at home to avoid contracting Covid-19. As you enjoy your stay at home, I know that you cannot wait to have fun. Well, here are a few things to do in your homes. Watch a movie, play some music, dance to the music, have some family time and relax. Also, do not forget to sanitise your hands. Do not touch your eyes, mouth or pick your nose. Stay at home and save a life. The coronavirus is real. Love you lots. Kisses and hugs.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the new coronavirus disease (Covid-19) outbreak a global pandemic on March 11. As at April 2, the number of confirmed cases stood at over 850 000, with the number of deaths at over 42 000, according to WHO.

As the virus spreads, so does fake news. Here, we look at some of the Covid-19 myths that have been widely shared on social networks in Zimbabwe.

There have been claims that the warm weather in Africa prevents the spread of the virus.

According to WHO, Covid-19 can be transmitted anywhere, “including areas with hot and humid weather”.

The best way to protect yourself is through good personal hygiene, including washing your hands.

Another widely circulated myth is that black skin can resist the transmission of coronavirus.

Secretary for Health and Child Care Dr Agnes Mahomva described the claim as “a myth with no science to it”.

“This is a new virus and very little is known about it,” she said.

“I have not come across any research that confirms the claim that African blood composition or black skin resists coronavirus.” — World Health Organisation website
