Eighteen-year-old Ronald Matimati of Soul City Pool Club was the toast of the Independence Tournament as he outplayed participants in a tightly contested competition held at Tagaz Pool Joint in Mutare on Saturday.

The Elis Gledhill Lower Sixth student walked away US$200 richer.

Allen Changadzo of Shoverland came second and received US$150 while Munyaradzi Nedziwe of Giants pocketed US$100 for settling for third position. Villa Spot’s Ricardo Neyo came fourth and got US$75.

The heavily subscribed tournament saw a total of 94 players from various Mutare Pool League (MPL) clubs taking part.

Tournament host, Albert ‘Tagaz’ Mataga was satisfied with the level of competition exhibited during the tournament.

“We are generally happy with the level of competition that was shown during the event. The attendance was fantastic, with a total of 94 players coming in to contest.

“This is why the tournament ended around 4am the next day, that was Sunday morning. Generally, we are happy with the direction the game of pool is taking in Mutare,” he said.

MPL fixtures secretary, Lloyd Samanga said: “Overall, the tournament was a great success, and congratulations to Ronald Matimati for his impressive victory.

“The Mutare Pool League players can look forward to future tournaments to further hone their skills and compete against their peers,” said Samanga.

Meanwhile, it is game on in the MPL this weekend with a number of matches lined up at different venues across the city of Mutare from Sunday to Monday.

Log leader and league new boys Shoverland, who are still basking in the glory of a hard won 13-11 triumph over stubborn Soul City, will be away to face Mahoya at Chigomba in the sprawling suburb of Sakubva.

League defending champions Rozvie Empire, who outplayed struggling Winsor in a match that ended in an 18-6 scoreline will this weekend host Buffalo.
