Team Zim ready for Olympics action

WITH the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games set for tomorrow, rower Peter Purcell-Gilpin sets the ball rolling for Team Zimbabwe when rowing competition gets underway on the same day.

 

Sprint ace Ngoni Makusha leaves for the games today. He is the country’s only track and field athlete at the Games and he will compete in the 100m race. His personal best is 10.41 seconds.

 

Makusha says becoming an Olympian has been a lifelong dream.

 

Golfer Scott Vincent left his US base yesterday and will touch down in Tokyo today.

 

Meanwhile, Team Zimbabwe Chef De Mission, Fredrick Ndlovu has confirmed that teenage swimmer Donata Katai and Purcell-Gilpin will be Zimbabwe’s flag bearers during the opening ceremony.

 

Five athletes – Purcell-Gilpin, Mukusha, Katai, fellow swimmer Peter Wetzlar and golfer Scott Vincent are representing the country at the Tokyo Games.
