ROAD rehabilitation works on the 100km stretch from Tanganda Halt to Checheche, which had been badly damaged over the years, is almost complete after less than three months it commenced.

Not so long ago, a heavily potholed and hardly impassable Tanganda-Ngundu Road, especially the first 100km stretch from Tanganda Halt to Checheche Business Centre, had become an eyesore.

Driving along the road had become a nightmare for motorists as it meant engaging very low gears in order to cause minimal damage to vehicles while ensuring safety for passengers.

Accidents caused by the poor state of the road resulting in needless loss of lives were on the increase and the December fatal head on collision that killed 12 people is an example.

However, when The Manica Post visited Checheche Business Centre early this week the rehabilitation works were almost complete with less than five kilometres to reach Checheche. Chipinge South legislator Cde Enoch Porusingazi said the reconstruction of the road is a welcome development.

Cde Porusingazi, who also runs his grocery retail, accommodation services and agro business projects in the area, said the reconstruction of Tanganda-Ngundu highway has restored hope for villagers in his constituency.

“We are so excited about the reconstruction of Tanganda-Ngundu highway. The short space of time used to refurbish the road is a sign of commitment from President Mnangagwa and his Government to improve infrastructure in the country. It is a welcome development that has restored hope for a better future to many villagers around.

“The road had become an eyesore, posing great danger to motorists. I am sure you reckon all those accidents that happened because of the state of the road. We are thankful to Government through the Ministry of Transport for refurbishing this road.

“We are also thankful to key Government partners like Greenfuel who provided fuel, water, accommodation for workers and other logistical needs for this project to come to fruition. The same goes for fellow legislators in Musikavanhu and Chipinge East, who worked tirelessly to ensure that we complete this project,” said Cde Porusingazi.

With Department of Roads as an implementation partner and Bitumen World Pvt Ltd as the contractor, the 54km stretch of the second phase of the 100km road reconstruction along Tanganda-Ngundu highway, started on February 15.

Tanganda-Ngundu highway makes a crucial contribution to economic development, growth and brings important social benefits to most communities along the road.
