SIX Mutare men were on Monday hauled before a Mutare magistrate facing allegations of fatally assaulting a suspected thief around midnight in Yeovil.

The suspects – Takudzwa Mandikate (31), Stuart Ziki (23), Archibold Masendeke (28), Wilson Nzula (37), Silvestone Pemhiwa (20) and Lloyd Mhlanga (42) – appeared before Mutare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe who remanded them out of custody to September 10 on $50 bail each.

Prosecutor Fletcher Karombe alleged on August 26 the six met the late Robert Mabate, of Sakubva, along Dobson Road in Yeovil, Mutare.

“At around 2am on August 26 the six met Robert in Yeovil at Dabson road, in Mutare and asked him where he was coming from. The accused persons started to argue, accusing him of theft hence they assaulted him with a golf stick, open hands and booted feet all over his body. They assaulted him on his face and shoulder,” he said.

Robert reportedly sustained head injuries and had bruises on his face and shoulder.

At that moment Archbald Masendeke (28) appeared at the scene and witnessed the incident.

“The accused told Masendeke that they saw Robert jumping over the precast wall and suspected him of theft. Masendeke saw the now-deceased with bruises on his shoulders and face,” he said.

Masendeke and the other two accused persons took the now-deceased to the Mutare Central Police station and filed a report on trespass against him.

Robert was referred to the Mutare Provincial Hospital for medication in police custody and died on admission.
