THE Summer Family Festival held last week on Saturday at Manicaland Motoring Club lived up to its billing, with the venue registering a historic turn-out, while all artistes put up premium performances.

The main act, ExQ, jumped onto the stage at around 11pm and put up a well-choreographed act.

He spiced up his performance with some energetic dancers who captivated revellers.

He made sure that revellers, mostly ladies, sang along to his old tunes such as Maidei.

His calmness and “bling” on stage was corroborated with some unique-yet-exciting choreography by his entourage.

Organisers of the event were on point, from lighting to security at the gate, save for one shortcoming – the sound quality!

It was difficult for a reveller who was further from the stage to crisply hear the lyrics and beats.

Although the sound was okay when supporting acts performed, it was evident that the speakers became overpowered by the influx of revellers as time passed.

Hopefully, the organisers learnt that there is need for a bigger public address sound system which is ideal for outdoor settings to ensure vocal clarity.

Performers Etherton Beenie, Garry B, Saintflow and DJ Lampy also put up exciting acts, with Afro jazz sensation, Rutendo Jackie, being one of the best performers of the night.

Her stage works were exceptional and her instrumentalists’ mastery in blending contemporary and traditional instruments such as mbira (thumb piano), saxophones, drums and congas charmed many.

Her energy on stage, her vocal prowess and communication with revellers were top drawer.

She belted out songs such as Handidi Nhamo, Waya Waya, Don’t Let Go, Zarurai Nzira and Nguva.

In an interview, Jackie said she is determined to work harder.

“I am glad that people are appreciating my work. It has not been an easy journey, but with the support that I am getting from my fans, it has been worthwhile,” she said.

She added that she is working on a six-track Extended Play (EP), which is due for release before the end of the year.
