STRONG winds that hit some parts of Chipinge last week, particularly the Chibuwe area of Musikavanhu Constituency, destroyed more than 20 houses in the district.

One elderly woman was injured after the building she was in collapsed.

One of the affected villagers, Ms Sarah Tauya, said her house was destroyed.

Her family is now staying with a relative in a neighbouring village.

“The strong winds hit us last week on Friday. Everything was normal that day and then suddenly, strong dusty winds accompanied with rains engulfed the whole area. Our rooftops were blown off and some houses collapsed,” she said.

Another villager, Mrs Susan Muhlabu said she is now staying in a makeshift house following the destruction of her house.

“We have moved to the small kitchen hut after the wind blew off the rooftop of our main house. Our buckets and plates were blown away,” she said.

Chipinge Rural District Council’s Ward 20 Councillor Charles Mugidho confirmed the incident and said some villagers are in dire need of assistance.

“The most heavily affected villages are Dambamuromo and Muzondakaya. In these villages, more than six households had their houses completely destroyed.

“An elderly woman sustained injuries and was treated at Chibuwe Clinic. Some of the affected families are staying with relatives in nearby villages, while some are repairing their damaged houses” said Councillor Mugidho.
