THE five boys who were ‘‘adopted’’ by the Anglican Diocese of Manicaland following the closure of St Charles Lwanga Secondary School in the aftermath of Cyclone Idai have found time to thank the Bishop of the Anglican Church.

Speaking to The Manica Post recently the five boys seemingly bubbling with health and excitement expressed gratitude for giving them a new lease of hope and life after believing they had come to the end of their education and dreams.

“I never believed it in the first stages that someone cared so much as to look for places for us in other schools,” said Roy Muteya.

“Other schools turned our desperate requests down and the listening ones suggested that we go back a grade to Form 3 if we wanted to continue with our education. Until Diamond FM came in to facilitate the securing of places! It was unbelievable. Such love and understanding from the Anglican Church . . . imagine! I personally found it hard to believe the Anglican Church was assisting learners from a different denominational school.”

Muteya’s sentiments were also echoed by Luckson Chakandinakira, “It was unbelievable. We all thought this was the end of our education. We want to thank the Bishop of the Anglican Church — Bishop Erick Ruwona, the effort of Diamond FM radio station. We were welcomed very well here at St Augustine’s ,” he said.

Thabiso Nyati said they quickly fitted into the student body and cannot believe they were at Tsambe. “We will do our best to prove a point. We will not lower the pass rate. There are excellent teachers here, good food and an excellent library. Thank you all of you who assisted, especially Bishop Ruwona for allowing us entry into an Anglican school . . . and one of the best,” he said. The St Augustine’s High School deputy head Mr Arnold Makamba said the boys settled in very well and were well behaved.

“The boys fitted in perfectly well. You can hardly notice they are new and from another school. All of them are sporty and participate actively in soccer and athletics. Lloyd Juru is a remarkable soccer player and all round athlete,’ said Mr Makamba.

“He was a match-maker in the recent Sakupwanya Tournament which our school won. Thanks to players like Lloyd and Lloyd himself.”

The school authorities counselled the boys and encouraged them to remain well behaved, focused on their studies and accomplish their mission which had been threatened or shaken by Cyclone Idai.
