A CHIPINGE-BASED soldier (24) was on Monday dragged to court after being nabbed while transporting dagga weighing 60kg to Harare.

Tichaona Ncube of 3.3 Infantry Reserve Battalion, Chipinge was not asked to plead when he appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mrs Elizabeth Hanzi facing charges of dealing with dangerous drugs.

He was remanded out of custody to September 30 on $5 000 bail.

Ncube is jointly charged with Anna Matikwa (21) of Epworth and Providence Vhiriri (24) of Vhiriri Village under Chief Nyashanu’s area in Buhera.

The trio had earlier on appeared in court when they were remanded to September 13, but Matikwa and Vhiriri defaulted.

This prompted Mrs Hanzi to issue a warrant of arrest against Matikwa and Vhiriri.

Appearing for the State, Mr Timothy Katsande, said on August 19, police led by Assistant Inspector Nyamasunda were manning a roadblock at Dumisayi Business Centre along Ngundu-Tanganda Highway when Ncube who was driving a white Toyota Corolla vehicle evaded the roadblock.

“Police became suspicious and they tried to stop the vehicle. Ncube managed to speed off and police swiftly notified their counterparts at ZRP Middle Sabi.

“Acting on the tip-off, police intercepted the vehicle at GMB Turn-off along the same road. The vehicle was signalled to stop and Ncube complied. He got out of the vehicle and approached the police officers,” said Mr Katsande.

He said when asked why he did not stop at the roadblock, Ncube told the police officers that he was transporting dangerous drugs.

“The vehicle was searched and police discovered 52 plastic carrier bags loaded with dagga. Ncube also told the police that he was hired by Matikwa and Vhiriri who were also in the vehicle to ferry the dagga to Harare. Ncube, Matikwa and Vhiriri were arrested and taken to ZRP Middle Sabi,” said Mr Katsande.
