A MUTARE woman stands accused of casting a spell on her husband’s mistress and prolonging her pregnancy which was only delivered after she was confronted.

Sheila Simango recently appeared before Mutare magistrate, Ms Ivy Musavengana as she was applying for a protection order against Praise Mukombe and her mother, Violet Nhema.

Simango said Mukombe and her mother visited her house and labelled her a witch.

The two accused Simango of casting a spell on Mukombe to prolong her pregnancy.

The court heard that Mukombe’s mother was armed with an axe which she used to break Simango’s door while shouting obscenities at her.

“On August 7, the two came to my house while I was away. I had gone out to look for firewood. When I returned, Violet was striking my door with an axe. I tried to stop her, but she threatened to attack me as well.

“She said they would not leave my place until I reversed the spell on her daughter so that she could deliver her baby. The two also assaulted me and tried to drag me to a spiritual healer, but I resisted as I am not a witch,” said Simango.

She said her husband is now giving Mukombe a cold shoulder, a move that is now being attributed to Simango’s alleged acts of sorcery.

“My husband is now ignoring Praise and they are blaming me for that. What I know is that no matter how much a man goes around changing women like clothes, he will always come back to his first wife. That is why they are accusing me of whatever that is happening to Praise,” said Simango.

Nhema said she vandalised Simango’s property out of anger.

“I did what every mother would do. We consulted a spiritual healer and we were told that Simango cast a spell on my daughter. She said my daughter would not give birth until we apologised to her. She was jealous of the affection that my son-in-law had for my daughter.

“My son-in-law now despises my daughter because of Sheila. He no longer visits Praise as he used to do.

“Praise then gave birth two weeks ago after we had confronted Sheila. My son-in-law has not visited my daughter as Sheila is stopping him.

“I had to pay for my daughter’s medical bills and I deserve compensation. It is not my responsibility to carry this burden when the child’s father is alive. She should convey the message to her husband, I want my money back,” charged Violet.

Ms Musavengana granted a protection order in Sheila’s favour.

Most pregnancies last 37 to 42 weeks, but some take longer.

If a pregnancy lasts more than 42 weeks, it is called post-term (past due).

As much as 10 percent of pregnancies are post-term.

While there are some risks in a post-term pregnancy, most post-term babies are born healthy.
