PREPARATIONS for the Shumba Sports Festival are at an advanced stage, an official has said.

The festival will be held at Mutare Boys and Girls High schools on March 28.

This will be the first time in five years for the popular sports extravaganza to be held jointly by the sister schools.

This year’s gala will run under the theme “Clash of the Giants”.

A number of high school sport giants will battle for honour at the festival.

Mutare Boys’ High sports director Kuda Dube said his troops will use the festival to prepare for the Dairibord Rugby Festival.

“Preparations of the Shumba Festival are going on well, with a number of schools confirming their participation. The aim of the festival is to prepare teams for the ball games that will be coming next term.

“The last two years saw the two schools holding the event separately, and to cement the wonderful relations between them, it was agreed that we go back to the traditional Shumba spirit of having this event together.

“As MBHS, we will also use this festival to prepare for the Dairiboard Rugby Festival, which will be played in Harare in April,” he said.

Dube highlighted that the festival will create a platform for cultural exchange as players from different parts of the province and beyond will be taking part.

Sport genres for the day will include rugby, soccer, basketball, volleyball, handball, netball and table tennis.

Participants will be required to pay an entrance fee of $200 per team.

There will also be a variety of prizes for winning teams and individuals, in addition to the floating trophies.

Games will take place at both schools, with rugby, soccer and handball being played at MBHS; while basketball, volleyball, table tennis and netball will be played at MGHS.

Holy Ghost, St David’s Bonda Girls High, St Augustine’s and several other local high schools have confirmed their participation.
