AFTER going on a sabbatical for the past two years due to the Covid-19 induced suspension of sporting activities, the Shumba Sports Festival 2023 edition is back!

Dubbed ‘The Post Covid Clash of the Giants’, the Mutare Boys’ High and Mutare Girls’ High-run event is arguably the biggest schools’ sports event in the province.

The games will be played at the two sister schools next Saturday in sporting disciplines that include rugby, soccer, volleyball, basketball and lawn tennis.

The annual sporting extravaganza gives participating schools and colleges an opportunity to sharpen their skills as they prepare for next term’s ball games competitions.

The tournament is open to both males and females participating in the open age group.

In a joint statement, the sports directors of the two schools running the games, Kudakwashe Dube and Margaret Matema-Puwai said they are expecting a huge turnout of participants from the province and beyond.

“Oriel Boys’ High School from Harare has confirmed that they will be taking part in rugby and a couple more teams from outside Manicaland are also expected to feature in the Festival.

“Rugby and football for both males and females will be played at Mutare Boys’ High, while basketball, volleyball and tennis will be played at Mutare Girls’ High. Winners will be awarded some prizes for their efforts.

“Some corporates such as Chicken Inn and Eat and Lick are partnering the schools by sponsoring prizes for some of the disciplines.

“It is a unique sporting event where sports persons from high schools and local colleges and universities share the turf to showcase their skills,” reads part of the statement.
