RUSAPE General Hospital recently received a shot in the arm through a donation of personal protective equipment worth US$20 000 from a Shamva-headquartered developmental partner, Developmental Aid from People to People.

The items include 1 000 aprons, 1 000 pairs of latex gloves, 500 litres of liquid soap, 275 litres of sanitisers, 206 disposable gowns, 190 face shields, 80 surgical face masks, 60 infrared thermometers and 50 knapsack sprays.

The organisation also donated food hampers worth US$10 000 to 500 Makoni villagers. These include 155 people living with HIV, 248 pregnant mothers, 17 tuberculosis patients, 25 child-headed families and 55 elderly people.

Presenting the donation, DAPP project leader Mrs Majecha Ruzvidzo said her organisation has joined other public and private sector stakeholders in complementing Government’s efforts to curb the socio-economic challenges that have risen due to Covid-19.

She said the fight against the pandemic is not a responsibility of the Government alone.

“As DAPP, we have seen it fit to play our part in responding to a national cause. This is in line with our organisation’s mission statement. We work with all 49 wards in Makoni District and all along we have been focusing on TB. We have now seen it fit to extend our hand to fight Covid-19,” she said.

“We also donated food hampers to some vulnerable people as we want them to lessen interactions with others. We are sending the message that staying at home is safe,” said Mrs Ruzvidzo.

Makoni District Medical Officer, Dr Tendai Nyafesa, said the donations will go a long way in complementing Government’s efforts in fighting the spread of the virus.

“Makoni is a very big district with a population of over 320 000 people. Therefore we have seen a lot of transmissions. The gesture is highly appreciated as it will ensure the safety of our frontline workers when they go out into the field or attend to patients. This is not the first donation from DAPP and we are very grateful for that,” he said.
