MUTARE City Rovers are geared for yet another bid for Premiership promotion and their efforts received a major boost after popular Mutare football benefactor James Lunga Meya donated training equipment recently.
The equipment comprised two sets of training bibs, three match balls and goalkeeper’s gloves.
Meya, who is fondly referred to simply as Hwetu in local football circles, is a construction industry entrepreneur who has helped a number of Mutare based teams and individual players in their pursuit of career development.
In his donation presentation speech, Meya pledged to partner Mutare City Rovers this season.
“This is just the begging of bigger things to come. Apart from the need to plough back to the community that raised me, one of the main reasons that made me decide to partner City Rovers is that it is a people’s project even though the club is owned by the local authority. People in Mutare, especially in Sakubva where I grew up, identify with the club more than most of the local clubs.
“We will sit down with the club leadership and find areas of common interest as we seek to forge a lasting relationship,” he said.
Mutare deputy mayor Kudakwashe Chisango, who received the donation on behalf of Mutare Ciyy Rovers, heartily thanked Meya for his gesture.
“We really appreciate your donation. It makes us feel we have the backing of the people of Mutare. We will give it our best shot in our efforts to regain our place in the top flight league,” he said.
Mutare City Rovers were relegated from the Castle Lager Premiership at the close of the 2018 season when Manica Diamonds were promoted.
