HARTZELL Old Basketball Association (Hoba) on Sunday donated basketballs worth US$600 to Gaza High School and Chipinge community teams in a move that seeks to spread the sport to the grassroots.

The donation is an initiative by Gaza High School coach, Itai Murema, who was part of the Hartzell High School team that begged the national championship in 1996.

Murema, also known as Bla Itso, sought assistance from his former teammates at the United Methodist Church-run school as part of his initiatives to ensure that the sport spreads to all of the province’s corners.

Murema is upbeat that his relationship with Hoba will yield positive results for the school and community in future.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Hoba vice-chairperson, Jonathan Denga said this is only the beginning of great things to come.

“It is just a start. We have come to show our appreciation and support for the coach’s programme. We hope the school and community teams under Murema’s guidance will be a force to reckon with and leave a legacy like what he (Murema) did with Hartzell’s wining team in 1996,” said Denga.

Speaking at the same occasion, former Hartzell High School basketball coach and Hoba patron, Ted Dewolf expressed gratitude on the enthusiasm shown by Murema in taking the sport to the grassroots.

He bemoaned lack of competition in schools’ basketball tournaments.

Prince Mwaemudzeni represented Gaza High School at the hand-over ceremony and thanked Hoba for the donation. He urged the association to continue working with poorly resourced schools to improve the quality of education offered.
