BIRIIRI Primary School’s lockdown aquaculture project is now bearing fruits, with the income generated expected to be channelled towards furnishing the computer laboratory.

The school has two fish ponds with 2000 tilapia and bream fingerlings.

The aquaculture focal person and senior teacher at the school, Mrs Alice Muresherwa, said the school’s month-old aquaculture project has a ready market from the surrounding community.

“Parents of pupils enrolled at the school came up with the idea of fish farming and development partners Tsuro Trust and Caritas funded us. As a school, we embraced it as it is generating income for us and helping to feed the community,” said Mrs Muresherwa.

Despite having been electrified many years ago, the school does not have computers, thereby prompting the responsible authorities to venture into fish farming.

“We were electrified a long time ago, but we do not have any computers. We agreed that the income raised from the fish project should be used to furnish the computer laboratory,” said Mrs Muresherwa.

Biriiri Primary School is the first primary school in Chimanimani to embark on the fish farming project. sDuring the lockdown, a few pupils were tending to the fish under Mrs Muresherwa’s supervision.
