A Penhalonga man is in trouble with the law after attacking his rival with a machete and stripping him naked in public accusing him of bedding his girlfriend.

Zondayi Vurayayi (26) also took his rival’s clothes and wallet.
Vurayayi of Old West Compound, Penhalonga, appeared before Mutare magistrate, Ms Prisca Manhibi last Thursday.

He was facing assault and theft charges as defined by the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.
He denied the charges and was remanded in custody to January 29 for trial.

Mr Talent Nyamuzuwa represented the State.

The court heard that on September 4, 2021 at Redwing Mine, Vurayayi allegedly went to Brian Saunyama’s home and accused him of cheating with his girlfriend.

He further accused Saunyama of being intimate with his girlfriend.

However, Saunyama denied the allegations.

This infuriated Vurayayi and he attacked Saunyama with a machete.

He struck Saunyama on the left cheek, resulting in Saunyama sustaining a deep cut. “Vurayayi also attacked Saunyama with a chair and fists all over the body,” said Mr Nyamuzuwa.

Later that day, Vurayayi proceeded to Penhalonga shops where he saw Saunyama as he was looking for transport to go to the clinic for medical attention.

Vurayayi threatened to assault Saunyama again, and forcibly stripped him naked.

Vurayayi took Saunyama’s clothes and wallet.

“Vurayayi took Saunyama’s pair of shoes, clothes and a wallet which contained US$300 as well as the complainant’s national identity card.

“After a police report was made, Saunyama’s clothes were recovered from Vurayayi’s house. The wallet, cash and ID were not recovered,” said Mr Nyamuzuwa.

Vurayayi was remanded in custody.
