South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has said it is high time sanctions against Zimbabwe are uplifted on the basis that it has embarked on the path to democratic renewal.

President Ramaphosa said this at an International Labour Organisation (ILO) meeting in Davos Switzerland ahead of the 49th edition of the World Economic Forum (WEF).

“Zimbabwe has emerged from a very difficult political situation and they held elections which went well but they still have sanctions that many countries around the world have imposed on them.

“We are some of those who have been calling on the world to relax the sanctions or lift the sanctions altogether so that Zimbabwe can begin to operate in an economic manner with the capabilities that it has,” President Ramaphosa said.

He added that the world can assist in addressing the economic problems Zimbabwe is facing if sanctions were lifted.

The World Economic Forum is an annual meeting that brings together governments, corporate, donors, the academia, labour and other high level players who control the global socio-economic levers.
