THERE was drama at the Mutare Magistrates Courts on Monday afternoon when relatives of a 19-year-old Form Four pupil who stabbed his schoolmate with a knife cried uncontrollably after the teenager was slapped with a 20 month jail term for committing the crime.

Senior magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo found Ashley Sango guilty of contravening Section 89 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23.

Of the sentence 10 months were set aside on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.

Public prosecutor Mr Fletcher Karombe told the court that the offence was committed on March 21. The accused and the complainant aged (15) are students at Alpha Institute. “On the day in question at around 4pm, the accused person stabbed the complainant with a knife on the eye after he bragged to the complainant that he could stab her.

“Following the attack the complainant sustained a cut on the eye and a medical examination done on her confirmed the injuries,” said Mr Karombe.

Soon after Mr Murendo read out the sentence, relatives of Sango weeped uncontrollably as they could not fathom the jail term that was awaiting the teenager.

The magistrate castigated Sango’s rowdy behaviour. He said instead of concentrating with school work, the teenager armed himself with a deadly weapon which he later used to attack a schoolmate without provocation.
