A 40-year-old maid is facing attempted murder charges after she laced mealie-meal belonging to a colleague with rat poison in an apparent fit of workplace hatred that could have turned tragic.

Solomon Nyadongo (21), who is employed as a gardener at Mushonga’s homestead in Murambi Gardens, is lucky to be alive after he was tipped by a prophet from his church to check his mealie-meal.

Chipo Musabaeka blamed her actions on evil spirits.

She said she did not want to kill Nyadongo but wanted to fix him because of the hatred she had towards him.

In an interview at Mutare Central Police Station following her arrest on Wednesday, Musabaeka said Nyadongo was being treated better by their employer, which pained her.

Officer Commanding Mutare Central Police Chief Superintendent Florence Marume said the suspect had planted large quantities of poison which could have killed the complainant had he prepared sadza using the mealie-meal

“Fortunately, the complaint — who is a member of an apostolic sect — went to church where he was told by a prophet that his mealie-meal had been poisoned. He went home and found the poison as explained by the prophet. We are charging her with attempted murder and she will go to court soon,” she said.
