In a disheartening development, some of the people who were the first to arrive at an accident scene along the Mutare-Masvingo Road on Tuesday night looted the accident victims’ goods while critically injured people writhed in pain and cried for help.

Those interviewed said the Zebra Kiss driver of the Zebra Kiss bus lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road at a curve along the road near Mutare Teachers College.

The bus’ conductor, Mr Blessing Madhuku said the bus was coming from Cape Town, adding that the accident occurred between 9pm and 10pm.

The bus had 27 people on board.

Ten people were taken to Victoria Chitepo Hospital.

Mr Madhuku said he was disappointed to see people dashing to the accident victim’s luggage which was in the trailer instead of helping to save their lives.

“There was a lot of looting that happened here last night and we are not even sure what was taken and what was not. In the trailer we also carry luggage for people who wo not be aboard so we are still trying to check what is missing,” he said.

Speaking to The Manica Post, one of the victims, Mr Mthokozisi Khanye said some people saw the accident as an opportunity to steal, adding that he lost his bag which had his passport.

“I lost my bag here. There were people who just came to take our things instead of helping us. In that bag was my passport. I just pray that the person who took my passport will return it,” said Mr Khanye.

Another passenger, Mr Jacob Ushe said when the accident occurred he was asleep, adding that the commotion woke him up.

“We received help about an hour and a half after the accident. The police are the ones who had to help the people who were hurt. They had to stop the people who were stealing from us. We could not do anything as we were still in shock,” he said.
