A 21-year-old Chimanimani man has been arraigned before the courts for allegedly stealing someone else’s identity to look for employment as a Cyclone Idai victim.

Tawanda Sigauke appeared before Mutare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe facing charges of “possession of articles for criminal use” as defined in section 40 of the Criminal Law of Codification Reform Act chapter 9:23.

He was remanded in custody to today for trial.

Prosecuting, Mr Chris Munyuku noted that on June 3, 2019, around 1400hrs at Mutare central police, Sigauke got into community relations liaison office seeking assistance in form of employment and alleged that he stays in Chimanimani and both of his parents were swept away by Cyclone Idai.

He said Sigauke produced Ordinary and Advanced Level certificates, birth certificate and a curriculum vitae which belonged to Edmore Mangiza and misreprented that he was Edmore Mangiza. He also said he needed assistance through benefiting from Chimanimani relief food programme.

The matter came to light when Constable Mutsenhu vetted Sigauke using finger prints, which failed to match with those of Mangiza. It was also discovered that Sigauke was uneducated since he failed to fill in the forms he was given to write his name.

After further investigations by the police, Sigauke confessed to the crime, leading to his arrest.
