LUCK ran out for a Buhera inmate who had escaped from Little Kraal Farm Prison in Nyazura after he was recaptured barely a month later.
Knowledge Mangunda (33) was serving a 12-month sentence for unlawful entry.
Last week he was further slapped with another 12 months for the foiled escape by Rusape magistrate, Mrs Rutendo Machingura.
However, six months were set aside on condition of good behaviour.
Mangunda pleaded guilty to the offence, saying he escaped from prison as fellow prisoners were trying to sodomise him.
State prosecutor, Mr Marlon Makamba said Mangunda took advantage of a prison officer’s brief absence to bolt away.
“On March 9, prison officer Clemence Njowa was safeguarding five inmates at Little Kraal Farm Prison while they were repairing a cattle pen. Upon completion of the task, Njowa and the inmates went to his house to return the tools they had been using.
“When Njowa went inside his house, Mangunda disappeared into the nearby bush and ran away. Njowa and the other inmates tried to give chase but failed to catch up with Mangunda.
“Sometime in April 2020, prison officer Pedro Muzoronda was at Shungudzemoyo Shop in Nyazura Township when he spotted Mangunda disembarking from a vehicle that was coming from Murambinda. The prison officer approached Mangunda and introduced himself before asking for his identification particulars,” he said.
Mangunda took to his heels and Muzoronda teamed up with two villagers to give chase. They managed to apprehend him.
