THE Ministry of Youth, Sports, Arts and Recreation through its provincial structures will tomorrow (Saturday) host the Women in Sports Festival in Nyanga as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations.

The sports festival will run under the theme “Each for Equal”. The festival’s purple theme represents the dignity and justice that prevails in the province’s sports sector.

Provincial sports and recreation officer Clifford Mujoko said the games will be at district, provincial and national level.

“The festival will start at the districts, before going to the provinces. The national event will then be hosted by Masvingo. Our first district games will be in Nyanga tomorrow.

“Mutare district will play its games on March 13 at Rowa. Buhera, Mutasa, Chipinge, Makoni and Chimanimani will have their district games the following day (March 14).

“Provincial games are slated for March 21 at the Chisamba grounds. The national finals will be held from March 23 to 28 in Masvingo,” revealed Mujoko.

He said the festival seeks to promote the participation of women in sport.

“The celebrations seek to promote women and girls’ participation in sport. Their participation is a fundamental prerequisite for gender equality and democracy.  “The International Women’s Day celebrations will capacitate the marginalised women and give them an equal opportunity to participate in sports and recreation,” he said.

There are plans to turn the festival into an annual event.

“We will hold these celebrations every year in all the ten provinces as a way to acknowledge and recognise the accomplishments and participation of female athletes. All the provinces will take turns to host the national celebrations.

“We are bringing together women from different sectors and we are motivating them to actively participate in sports and recreation. This will also bridge the gap between religious and cultural beliefs and sports and recreation,” said Mujoko.

During the festival, participants will battle it out in soccer, volleyball, netball and chess, among others.
