IN a positive development for visual and performing arts in Mutare, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe recently launched a Theme Park project which is aimed at championing sustainable development of local cultures targeting children in pre-schools and infant grades at primary school level.

All proposals relating to Theme Park aimed at sustainable development of local cultures will take place under “Zero tolerance to litter, my environment my pride”.

Addressing participants, prominent fashion designer and Mutare Garments proprietor, Job Torindo said, “This is a milestone achievement and we foresee this project being adopted by other cultural sites in Bulawayo and Harare for increased sustainable development of local cultures especially with young”

Despite low turn up by most invites at the event, Sheni Primary School dominated the theme park space with 103 children who were accompanied by six teachers. The children took turns playing on artistic swings, see-saws and using binoculars to view Mutare apart from enjoying face painting and jumping castle services.

NGZ Mutare regional director, Elizabeth Muusha said besides serving as a learn and play centre for children, Theme Park is work in progress with multiple purposes including shooting wedding photos and artists’ videos for local people.

“Watching these young people play evidenced children’s rights to play. We therefore plead with various authorities out there to support these young people to visit Theme Park and other similar projects for purposes of learning their culture through play. Well supported by every organ, this project has potential not to benefit the National Gallery of Zimbabwe only but the whole community and the nation at large towards promoting sustainable development of local cultures,” she said.
