MANICALAND’S two representatives in the Castle Lager Premiership – Tenax and Manica Diamonds – endured a weekend of mixed fortunes after posting contrasting results in their league assignments.

In yesterday’s matches, the prisons wardens were 1-0 victors over visiting championship-chasing Chicken Inn at Vengere, while the diamond miners were walloped 3-0 away to Highlanders at Babourfields.

The results had telling effects on both teams’ run in the campaign.

For Tenax, the triumph brought the much-needed respite which saw them snap a three-game losing streak to return to winning ways and pick only their second victory in the last five matches.

It also blew some wind into the prisons wardens’ sail from the murky waters of relegation. With 20 points from as many games, they occupy 14th position on the 16-team table, one place above the last demotion slot.

On the other hand, the loss compounded Manica Diamonds’ misery as it was their second successive defeat. It also severely dented their hopes of landing the league title as they now trail leaders FC Platinum by 11 points. The Gem Boys have amassed 32 points from 20 games and remain in fourth place.
