THE country’s ICT and telecommunications regulator – the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) – is aiming to achieve a 100 percent internet penetration rate by 2030.

Speaking during an on-going two-day all stakeholder conference for the telecommunications sector in Vumba just outside Mutare, POTRAZ director General, Dr Gift Kalisto Machengete said currently the internet penetration rate in the country stands at 63 percent.

“Currently, we are at 63 percent with regards to internet penetration rate as a country. We are aiming to attain a 100 percent rate by 2030. This dovetails into the vision we have as a country to attain an upper middle class economy by 2030. POTRAZ has struck a first by convening an all stakeholder conference for the telecommunications sector to discuss issues of ICT access, tariff affordability and sector viability among a host of other issues affecting the sector.

“The purpose of the workshop is for stakeholders to find common and lasting solutions to ensure progress in the telecommunications sector for both consumers and operators. This is meant to strike a balance between consumer accessibility and operator,” said Dr Machengete.

Several stakeholders that include parliamentarians, operators in the telecommunications and ICT sector, the media and consumer representative bodies, among others, are gathered for the engagement workshop.
