TERTIARY institutions, including most universities in the country, are offering Peace Studies as a key learning area, but this should cascade down to kindergarten level, a National Peace and Reconciliation Commission official has said.

Speaking during a Peace Meeting held at a local hotel yesterday, Commissioner Responsible for Policy Issues on Peace in Manicaland, Dr Golden Chekenyere said in order to strengthen the culture of peace in the country, Peace Studies must be incorporated in the curriculum at an early stage.

“I have noticed that all our universities and colleges are offering Peace Studies as a learning area. That is good, but we need to have this from an early stage.

“Our children need to learn about the importance of peace and how it can be maintained from an early age, kindergarten to be precise. This will go a long way in promoting peace for all generations,” he said.

Commissioner Dr Chekenyere chairs the Peace Committee in Manicaland, while Dr Mazvita Machinga and Reverend Edmond Samutereko are co-vice chairpersons.

Mr Joseph Mashingaidze is the secretary to the committee.

The other members are drawn from different sectors including academia, civic society, women and youth organisations, government departments, local authorities, war veterans, church and other faith based organisations, people with disabilities, media, traditional leaders, political parties and Zimbabwe Republic Police.
