HORTICULTURE farmers in Manicaland have been urged to practise out-of-season cultivation as a way of enhancing production and increasing profitability.

Off-season vegetable production enables farmers to plant and harvest fresh vegetable produce before or after their normal season.

Local agronomist Mr Clemence Mucharedzeyi said producing and supplying vegetables to the market during their lean period of supply generates revenue.

“As we approach the end of the winter season, farmers are encouraged to venture into off-season production. The production of fresh green mealies is ideal during this period. In the face of climate change, farmers in low-lying areas can also produce tomatoes and beans so that they can provide adequate supply when on huge demand as they will be out of season. Off-season vegetable production is one viable way of making money for farmers,” said Mr Mucharedzeyi.

He added that all-year-round production has many advantages and urged farmers to take agriculture as a serious business.
