THE Covid-19 vaccination campaign in Manicaland has stepped up, with the Ministry of Health and Child Care rolling out an expanded programme across the province in schools, colleges, workplaces, churches and market places.

Manicaland provincial health promotion officer, Mrs Agnes Mugumbate said the Ministry of Health and Child Care will hold two rounds of Covid-19 vaccination blitz in Manicaland, with the first one running from March 21 to April 3, and the other one from May 2 to May 15 after the country yesterday launched an upgraded campaign targeting everyone above 12 years.

Mrs Mugumbate said with Manicaland recently recording high numbers as new infection cases spiked, it was important for those eligible to receive the jabs.

She said more outreach sites will be opened in towns and districts across the province to take the exercise nearer to communities and ensure convenience.

“We started the expanded vaccination campaign yesterday targeting everyone eligible starting from 12-year-olds. As well as moving around in schools and colleges, we are also setting up various other points in strategic locations for convenience. Companies can make arrangements with the Ministry and have their employees vaccinated at their workplaces.

“The first, second and third booster shots are all available and getting inoculated is important in reducing the rate of infection while also minimising the severity of symptoms and averting possible death,” said Mrs Mugumbate.

People living with HIV and Aids and those with chronic illnesses can receive the jab without any health complications as it was safe for them, she added.

Mrs Mugumbate also called on communities to assist the elderly and people with disabilities to get to the vaccination points and be inoculated.

She said: “It is perfectly safe for those suffering from diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, heart and lung diseases and others to receive Covid-19 doses. Parents and guardians should encourage their children above 12 years to get the jabs, while the elderly and those with disabilities should be assisted to get vaccinated. Herd immunity can be achieved by ensuring that everyone who is eligible gets vaccinated.”

Mrs Mugumbate urged the public to continue observing and upholding the recommended health guidelines such as masking up, hand sanitisation and practising physical distancing as ways of combating the pandemic’s spread.

She also called on people to desist from spread falsehoods and unverified information about Covid-19.
