AT least 66 farmers in Ward Seven of Makoni District are receiving training in apiculture with the assistance of a local organisation aimed at accelerating the production of honey for domestic and international markets.

The project is being spearheaded by Africa Ahead.

In an interview, Africa Ahead country director Mr Regis Matimati said the programme is being run for a year to the tune of US$25 000.

He said farmers have already received 154 beehives, among other equipment, to kickstart the project.

“We are running the project in Ward Seven of Makoni District for a year working in conjunction with Agritex. Farmers have started receiving the tools and equipment required such as the beehives and timber. They were also trained on safe bee-keeping practises and effective management of hives,” said Mr Matimati.

Apiculture is set to grow significantly in the country following measures that have been put in place by Government to improve investment and production in bee products for export markets.
