BANANA farmers in Honde Valley are keen to have the Pfumvudza farming concept extended to their sector to help in boosting production of the crop.

Pfumvudza is a climate-proofing agricultural concept which emphasises on the use of conservation farming techniques while ensuring efficient resources (inputs and labour) to make the most out of small pieces of land through intensification of crop production and optimising management.

The local farmers association’s chairperson Mr Aaron Mapondera said adopting Pfumvudza will help their members cut on procurement costs of inputs needed for production.

This, he added, results in improving both the quality and quantity of the produce.

“As banana farmers in Honde Valley, we are appealing to have the Pfumvudza programme extended to us. Many, including those in sugar bean production, are keen to embrace Pvumvudza as this will go a long way in improving our productivity and profitability through provision of inputs,” said Mr Mapondera.

Government is intensifying efforts to boost agricultural production through conservation agriculture methods also known as Pfumvudza to guarantee food self-sufficiency and promote nutrition while also commercialising smallholder agriculture mainly in production of grain.
