The ManicaPost

WHEN looking ahead into the coming months, there are lots of trend forecasts we’re interested in. From wedding dress trends to the latest in interiors to the prettiest new flower ideas , there’s so much to look forward to in 2019.

And one trend we’re always excited about is all the newest creative options for wedding cakes.

Long gone are the days that the ubiquitous all-white cake reigned supreme; these days, cake designers are having fun reinventing the wheel and incorporating all kinds of new shapes, colours, patterns, and materials that would have never been dreamt of in wedding cake trends past.

Ferns

Greenery is nothing new on cakes, but we’ve been seeing a ton of ferns being used in place of the typical eucalyptus or other more popular wedding greens. Paired with a subtly textured white buttercream, this cake feels like the more refined sister of your typical “rustic” cake.

Doughnut cake

Not a fan of a traditional cake? 2019 is your year! Leading the way, this doughnut cake (or, tower we should say) is just another way you can feed your guests donuts sans a doughnut wall (which seems to still be going strong, by the way—but this may actually be a good money saving alternative).

“Cheese” cake

We know you’ve probably seen this, but the cake made of actual wheels of cheese still continues to delight! We love cheese just as much as cake, so we understand how this could be the perfect alternative for a couple who isn’t super keen on sweets. Plus, the fruit atop the cheese is perfect to eat alongside your post-dinner fromage!

One-tiered cakes

Brides and cake designers alike have been getting on board with simpler, more modern one-tiered confections. The great thing about this trend is it’s a more affordable way to have multiple cakes of different styles and different flavours without an overwhelming cake display—it feels much more today than cake displays of the past.

Pulling traditions from other cultures

Lately we’ve been seeing traditional wedding cakes from other cultures growing in popularity—the above is a traditional Scandinavian dessert called Kransekake. We’ve also noticed lots of oversized millefoglie (a traditional Italian pastry with Chantilly cream and strawberries) among some of the most stylish weddings in the past couple of years!

Tile inspired prints

A great idea of a one-tiered cake to add interest? Have your cake designer hand paint fondant (or print the fondant) with an intricate tile-inspired pattern in blues, whites, and yellows.

Non-wedding cake

Not into buttercream and fondant? Have a pound cake with drizzled poppy seed glaze or a layered sponge cake with flavoured whipped cream!

Narrow Rectangular Cakes

For the bride that wants a modern silhouette for her wedding cake and wants to forgo traditional round tiers, we predict that tall and narrow tiered rectangular cakes are going to be more popular in the year to come.

Edible Flowers

We love the look of edible flowers on cakes—especially when executed like the above—when they appear semi-2D. They look like pressed flowers which feel at once both nostalgic and super fresh. — www.brides.com
