RESIDENTS in Mutare have been urged to uphold health precautionary measures after cholera killed one person this week, with 17 out of 52 suspected cases having been confirmed in the city.

In an interview, Mutare City Council acting director of health services Mrs Eunice Muyambuki said most of the cases are being reported in high density suburbs.

She said the local authority is heightening efforts in responding to the cholera outbreak by addressing water, sanitation and hygiene needs in the affected areas.

“Out of 52 suspected cholera cases reported in the city, 17 have been confirmed. Most of these have been recorded in high density suburbs. We are calling on communities to remain vigilant and uphold high hygienic practices for their own safety. Precautionary measures have to be taken at all times to prevent outbreaks and spread of the disease,” said Mrs Muyambuki.

She added that they will continue raising awareness about cholera in communities, especially in public places and schools.

Over 200 choleras cases have been confirmed and 734 suspected cases reported across the country since the outbreak of the disease in February.

Five people succumbed to the disease countrywide so far.
