A 37-YEAR-OLD man from Mahenye in Chipinge District is alleged to have murdered a four-year-old boy in cold blood.

Oscar Hlongwane of Puzi Village, who is suspected to be a mental health patient, appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mr Alfred Chinembiri today facing murder charges.

He was remanded in custody to February 28.

Prosecutor, Mr Thulani Zondwayo said on February 16, Hlongwane was in possession of dangerous weapons in Puzi Village when he committed the offence.

“Hlongwane was seen by Elina Masango passing through the now late Desperate Chauke’s homestead where he was playing with his brother, Desmond (eight). The accused was holding a knife and a log and started chasing the two children,” he said.

Desperate fell down and was stabbed by Hlongwane.

“He stabbed him once on the head, once on the back and once on the right side of the chest. Desperate sustained deep cuts and bled profusely,” said Mr Zondwayo.

Mr Zondwayo said other villagers alerted Desperate’s father, Mr Isaac Chauke, who rushed to the scene and tried to render first aid to his child but it was too late.

Desperate’s body was conveyed to Chipinge District Hospital for post mortem.

Police from Chisumbanje attended the scene and arrested Hlongwane.
