THE drive to promote access to and improve usage of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in schools has seen at least seven learning institutions in Chipinge District receive digital learning equipment from a development partner.

The equipment was donated by World Vision Zimbabwe and distributed by Echo Scale DP to Ngaone, Paidamoyo, Tanganda, Chisavanye and Beacon Hill primary schools as well as Tamandai and Shekwa secondary schools.

Echo Scale DP programmes manager Dr Tapiwa Muzerengi said the donation of computers, laptops, printers and other accessories was meant to enhance learners’ access to ICTs in the country’s hazard-prone districts like Chipinge.

“Our project is complementing Government efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness in schools and communities. We are working with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to strengthen the delivery of education during emergencies like disasters and ensuring that pupils continue learning in any situation.

“Disasters should not be a stumbling block to education and that prompted us to hand over the digital learning suites to seven schools in Chipinge District,” said Dr Muzerengi.

The benefitting schools expressed gratitude for the gesture, saying it will go a long way in enhancing their access to and usage of ICTs.

Under the National Development Strategy (NDS 1), Government is targeting a digital economy by increasing the Internet penetration rate from 59.1 percent in 2020 to 75.42 percent by 2025.
