TWO drivers died on the spot when their vehicles were involved in a fatal accident with a haulage truck at the 257km peg along the Harare-Mutare Highway near Christmas Pass this morning.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed the accident, saying both drivers died on the spot.
The accident was attributed to human error as it occurred during overtaking.
“A Toyota Hilux and Honda Fit were travelling towards Mutare when the driver of the former vehicle attempted to overtake the latter at the 257km peg along the Harare-Mutare Highway. A Shacman truck was travelling from the opposite direction and when the driver of the Toyota Hilux tried to get back into his lane to avoid a collision, he lost control of the vehicle before it swerved and hit the fuel tanker. This resulted in the Toyota Hilux crashing into the Honda Fit.
“The two drivers died on the spot as they were trapped in their vehicles. They were extricated by the City of Mutare fire brigade who had attended the scene,” said inspector Muzondo.
Inspector Muzondo urged motorists to exercise caution at all times.
