Mutare’s Fernhill township declared Special Economic Zone

THE Zimbabwe Special Economic Zones Authority has declared a portion of Fernhill Township in Mutare a Special Economic Zone with effect from September 14, 2018.

This was revealed in the Government Gazette Extraordinary published on September 28, 2018.

“It is hereby notified that, in terms of Section 20 of the Special Economic Zones Act (Chapter 14:34), the Zimbabwe Special Economic Zones Authority has declared the areas specified below to be Special Economic Zones with effect from 14th September 2018.

“Portion of Fernhill South Township, measuring 87 hectares, situated in Mutare municipal area. . . ,” read part of the statement.

Two other areas that were conferred with the same status alongside Fernhill were Stand 518 of Beitbridge, also known as Beitbridge Export Processing Zone and measuring 106 ha and Masuwe Stateland in Victoria Falls, which sits on 1 200ha of land.

Zimbabwe Special Economic Zones Authority chief executive, Mr Edwin Kondo said a map showing the area covered by the economic zones would be made available for                       inspection at the Zimbabwe Special Economic Zones Authority offices in Harare.

He said interested parties would be able to access the information between 8am and 4pm from Monday to Friday except during public holidays or alternatively visit the organisation’s website on www.zimseza.co.zw.

In an interview, Mutare City public relations manager, Mr Spren Mutiwi said the declaration of Fernhill Township as a Special Economic Zone had come at an opportune time when the city had just availed land for the construction of a gemology centre in the area where there will be processing of diamonds and other minerals.

“We are very excited about this development as Mutare City and we will ensure that the Special Economic Zone status of Fernhill Township is implemented to conclusion.

“We want to see it working and we want the construction of the gemology centre to be hastened as well so that the city can start reaping the benefits that come with developments of this magnitude,” he said. eas in the country,” he said.
