THREE of Manicaland’s rugby players – Jestina Ncube from Eastern Giants in Dangamvura and the Sahumani duo of Cathrine Muranganwa and Trish Kandemiri – are part of the women national team rugby players in camp in preparation for the match against Zambia.

Zimbabwe face Zambia at home in Harare on June 2.

The three who have been part of the Under-18 national team will be expecting to make their senior national team debut if selected into the finally squad.

Manicaland Rugby Board chairman, Josiah Borerwe, confirmed the inclusion of the trio in the women Sables camp, saying the province is aiming at producing more female rugby players.

“Jestina Ncube from Eastern Giants in Dangamvura and the Sahumani duo of Cathrine Muranganwa and Trish Kandemiri are in camp for the women national team rugby players preparing for the match against Zambia.

“This is a positive development for our game as a province and we hope we will have more players coming through our clubs going all the way to the national team.

“We are certain that we will achieve that given the grassroots structures that we are setting up in every district that will oversee the formation of more clubs in order to identify and nurture talent,” said Borerwe.

Manicaland Rugby Board has unearthed unpolished gems in Honde Valley where Sahumani Secondary School girls surprised everyone including themselves when they matched in several competitions with their urban counterparts in both skill and stamina.

Today, fruits of their hard work are evident with the inclusion of some of their players in the national team set up.

Apparently, this is the first time that players based in Manicaland have been drafted into the national senior women’s team set-up.

“To us this is a historic moment because never before had we have players based in Manicaland being drafted into the national team set-up. We really hope that they will be good ambassadors of the developments taking place in this province as far as the game of ruby is concerned,” Borerwe added.
